Former Sergeant Imprisoned for Sexual Assault on Young Servicewoman

A former military sergeant has been given six months in custody for attacking a young gunner who later died by suicide.

Warrant Officer the former sergeant, 43, restrained service member the young woman and sought to kiss her in the summer of 2021. She was discovered deceased five months later in her military accommodation at Larkhill, Wiltshire.

The defendant, who was judged at the military court in Wiltshire recently, will be sent to a correctional facility and listed on sexual offenders list for multiple years.

Gunner Beck's mother the mother remarked: "What he [Webber] did, and how the military did not safeguard our daughter following the incident, cost Jaysley her life."

Military Response

The military leadership said it failed to hear Gunner Beck, who was originally from the Cumbrian village, when she reported the assault and has expressed regret for its response to her allegations.

Subsequent to an inquest into the tragic death, the accused admitted to a single charge of physical violation in the autumn.

The mother stated her child should have been sitting with her family in court this day, "to see the person she accused brought to justice for what he did."

"Rather, we appear without her, facing perpetual grief that no loved ones should ever experience," she continued.

"She followed the rules, but those responsible failed in their duties. Such negligence broke our young woman completely."

Judicial Process

The judicial body was advised that the violation took place during an adventure training exercise at the training location, near Emsworth in Hampshire, in summer 2021.

Webber, a ranking soldier at the period, attempted physical intimacy towards Gunner Beck subsequent to an social gathering while on assignment for a training exercise.

The victim claimed Webber stated he had been "seeking a chance for them to be in private" before making physical contact, pinning her down, and trying to kiss her.

She filed a complaint against the accused subsequent to the assault, despite attempts by superiors to convince her against reporting.

An inquest into her suicide found the military's management of the allegations played "an important role in her suicide."

Mother's Testimony

In a statement presented to the judicial body earlier, the parent, stated: "She had recently celebrated 19 and will forever remain a youth full of vitality and joy."

"She trusted individuals to safeguard her and after what he did, the confidence was gone. She was extremely troubled and terrified of the accused."

"I saw the transformation before my own eyes. She felt helpless and deceived. That incident destroyed her faith in the set-up that was meant to safeguard her."

Sentencing Remarks

When announcing the verdict, The judicial officer the magistrate stated: "We need to assess whether it can be dealt with in an alternative approach. We are not convinced it can."

"We conclude the severity of the offence means it can only be resolved by immediate custody."

He told Webber: "She had the bravery and wisdom to instruct you to cease and directed you to retire for the night, but you carried on to the point she felt she could not feel secure from you even when she retreated to her personal quarters."

He stated further: "The following day, she reported the incident to her loved ones, her friends and her military superiors."

"After the complaint, the unit decided to address your behavior with minor administrative action."

"You underwent questioning and you accepted your conduct had been unacceptable. You composed a letter of apology."

"Your military service continued without interruption and you were subsequently elevated to senior position."

Further Details

At the investigation into the tragic passing, the investigating officer said a commanding officer pressured her to cease proceedings, and just informed it to a military leadership "after information had leaked."

At the moment, Webber was given a "minimal consequence discussion" with no further consequences.

The inquiry was also told that only a short time after the incident Gunner Beck had further been subjected to "continuous bullying" by a different service member.

A separate service member, her superior officer, sent her more than 4,600 digital communications expressing emotions for her, accompanied by a fifteen-page "personal account" outlining his "fantasies about her."

Institutional Response

The Army expressed it offered its "sincerest condolences" to the servicewoman and her relatives.

"We continue to be profoundly sorry for the shortcomings that were noted at the formal investigation in winter."
