Previous Federal Bureau of Investigation director James the ex-FBI chief has pleaded not guilty to making false statements to lawmakers and obstructing a legislative process.

The former director's legal representative entered the plea representing him in a federal court in Alexandria, Virginia on mid-week.

His attorney declared he would seek to have the legal matter thrown out for several causes including that his defendant, a critic of former President Trump, was being singled out.

James Comey was formally accused just days after the former president pressured his top legal official to move forward against him.

Court Developments

At the proceedings on mid-week, his attorney the legal representative advised the court they intended to present several petitions to dismiss the proceedings before a court case, claiming the legal action was spiteful and that a US attorney was improperly appointed to assume control of the case.

The former director's case was initially overseen by Erik Siebert, who stepped down under influence from Donald Trump after his investigation into an additional rival - the New York official - did not succeed to bring criminal charges.

Courtroom Atmosphere

Mr Comey appeared in positive mood as he entered the legal venue on mid-week, speaking with his attorneys and being lighthearted. He was joined by his partner, Patrice Failor and child Maureen, a federal prosecutor who the former government dismissed.

Following the reading to the court recite his constitutional guarantees and the dual charges against him in the courtroom on Wednesday, the defendant was inquired if he grasped the charges.

"Absolutely your honour. Appreciate it," he informed the judge.

Previous Events

Mr Comey was the head of the FBI from 2013 to 2017 and was fired about four months into the former president's first term as national leader. At the time, Mr Comey was overseeing an probe into Russian election interference and whether there were any connections between Russia and Trump's campaign.

During his tenure, the director caused a counter-response from liberal politicians when he declared just shortly prior to the 2016 presidential election that he was probing political contender the candidate's use of a private email server. Legal actions against the candidate were not pursued, causing criticism from the Republican party as well.

Present Charges

Prosecutors claim James Comey gave untrue statements to US lawmakers during a congressional hearing in recent years when he was being questioned about both the Clinton investigation as well as the election interference investigation. They say he provided false information to the Senate by stating he had not permitted a person at the Federal Bureau of Investigation to release to news outlets data about the FBI investigations.

Government lawyers also allege Mr Comey of "corruptly endeavoring to influence, block and delay" the panel by making false statements to it.

Personal Comments

Via social media Mr Comey published to his online platform after he was indicted, he declared he was innocent and charged Donald Trump of conducting himself like a "dictator".

"We have understood for considerable time that there are consequences to challenging Donald Trump," he commented. "We choose not to live on our knees."
"I'm innocent," he stated further. "Thus initiate a legal proceeding."

These allegations against Mr Comey came after the former president shared on social media calling for his attorney general, Ms Bondi, take legal action against Mr Comey and other people.
