The UK Foreign Office has added 11 more nations to its public advisory roster concerning the dangers of industrial alcohol contamination from adulterated alcoholic drinks.

The revised warning now includes Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda following evidence showing "a worldwide rise in the incidence of documented incidents" of industrial alcohol poisoning.

Only a few weeks ago, authorities had previously placed Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the current list, following a number of serious incidents like the tragic death of six visitors in Laos in 2024.

Travelers are being cautions that as little as tiny quantities of methanol can result in permanent eye damage or fatality within 12–48 hrs.

Exactly what is Toxic Alcohol and In what way is it Employed?

Industrial alcohol is a poisonous substance typically employed in antifreeze, windscreen washer fluid, and paint solvent. This substance is not intended for ingestion.

Although it is inherently formed during the creation of spirits, commercial firms reduce it to minimal, harmless amounts for ingestion through the distillation process.

However in certain nations, it is illegally mixed into alcoholic drinks to save money, and as it is flavorless and odourless, it is extremely challenging to notice.

Government Advice for Tourists

Government minister the minister stated that all travellers should know the signs of industrial alcohol contamination.

"When you are consuming alcohol in foreign countries, stick to reputable establishments and avoid local brews or unspecified beverages," the minister said.
